How was Latin America's ruling elite similar to Europe's ruling class?

The ruling classes of Latin America-initially the peninsulares and, after independence, the creoles ruled over their haciendas (large estates and plantations) like European lords ruled over peasants during the Middle Ages, trapping people of the lower classes into slavery and debt peonage.
