What did Christian monks do in order to pursue a more spiritual life than they could find in ordinary society?

Christian monks lead a life away from the average society which is based on the spiritual disciplines of obedience, silence, vigils, good works, fasting, chastity, confession and prayer. This pillars of God oriented behavior make them have an inner existence instead of being in touch with the corruptions of the ordinary world.
