The First Crusade was launched in 1096 after a speech given by Pope Urban II at Clermont in France.

The Muslims had invaded and conquered the Holy Land (Jerusalem and surrounding areas) and the Pope called for all Christians to drive them out. He wanted a military expedition to aid the Byzantine Empire.

The First Crusade was comprised of various military campaigns, some of them led by religious fanatics such as Peter the Hermit, and some by noblemen. It was a very brutal crusade, with many atrocities committed against Jews and Christians.

The First Crusade ended with the recapture of the city of Jerusalem and a murder of all the city's Jews.
