Although it's a fact of today's society, most people did not live in cities. The Industrial Revolution changed that.

Before the Industrial Revolution, most people lived in rural areas as small farmers. Most of these farms were run by a single family, not like the huge industrial level operations we see today.

When the Industrial Revolution happened, there was no reason for the new factories to be built in the middle of nowhere. So they were built in cities. The farmer class of people saw an chance to find new work and earn money. Scores of people moved to the cities. This is how we got to the present day when well over half the world lives in urban or suburban areas.
