    Answer: They were hoping to avoid being drawn into other wars that were not related to territorial self-defense.

    Explanation:

    When you think of isolation, what usually comes to mind, is shutting yourself out or someone shutting others out. The isolationism policy was in place to "shut out" other country's from dragging them into wars.
