The answer is: European countries were interested in finding new markets in which to sell goods

By the time the European aware of the Chinese societies, they realized that they have larger number of population than them. This mean that China was a potential new markers for them to sell goods.

This intent was supported by the fact that China was late in implementing new technologies that created during the industrial revolution. This mean that many of the products that the European can offer wouldn't be found in China.
