The Byzantine Empire was the Eastern region of the Roman Empire that survived throughout the Middle Ages. The Roman Empire split into two parts in 395 AD after the death of Theodosius I and was divided among his two sons. The Western Roman Empire had its capital in Rome and later in Ravenna, while the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as the Byzantine Empire, had its capital in Constantinople, today known as Istanbul. The Byzantine Empire was mainly Greek but it inherited many aspects of the Roman Empire, like the Christian religion. It also had to face problems that were common during the time of the Romans, like the necessity of fighting off invading groups. The Byzantine Empire faced invasions coming from the East, like the Huns and the Seljuk Turks, who conquered many regions in Anatolia and the Middle East. The Seljuk Empire was the predecessor of the Ottoman Empire, which finally conquered Constantinople in 1453 putting an end to the Byzantine Empire.
