Babylon was built on both sides of the Euphrates river, It became an independent and important city-state. Its location lies in today's Iraq, southwest of Iraq. There is a famous song which has the name of "Rivers of Babylon"; the lyrics goes ... "by the rivers of Babylon, ..., when we remember zion" ... in reference to the captivity of a number of ancient Hebrews in Babylon.
