    Free Soilers

    American political party founded by abolitionists in August 1848 convention in Buffalo. Its members, called free-soilers, opposed the extension of slavery in the territories annexed by the United States after the war with Mexico. The party ended its activity in 1854 and was absorbed by the Republican Party.
