    Roosevelt wanted to become a candidate for the Republican Party in the elections in 1912, but found no support. Opposed to the growing conservatism of the Republican Party controlled by President William Taft, Senator Robert M. La Follette of Wisconsin organized in 1911 the National-Progressive Republican League. The following year, it transformed into the Progressive Party
