To what extent did political parties contribute to the development of national unity in the United States between 1790 and 1840?

    Political parties did far more to divide the nation than to unite it. Practically all of the Founding Fathers did not want a party system to emerge in the United States, because it created "teams" whose inherent desire was to beat the other side.
