What political and economic systems emerged in Europe during the Middle Ages and how was the church a unifying force?

Both the political and economic systems that emerged in Europe during the Middle Ages had to do with "feudalism", in the sense that there was a very strict social hierarchy--meaning that the Church was the ultimate source of authority, and those in the lowing rings of society had practically no economic or political influence on the state.
