Why was the 14th amendment significant to the civil rights movement?

The 14th amendment stated that any person born in the territory of the US was a US citizen: this removed any doubts of the citizenship of black population: all people, regardless of their skin colour were citizens. The amendment was adopted in 1868, so shortly after the civil war, when this was not yet accepted.
