Two important natural resources in Africa have been oil and diamonds. There are numerous oil rich countries in Africa both in North Africa such as Libya and in West and Southern Africa such as Nigeria, and Angola. Oil has played a major role in the economic and political development of these countries in that oil revenues have largely been kept in the hands of a few high ranking individuals and there has also been a high degree of corruption associated with the resource. Another important resource in Africa are diamonds. Diamonds have spurred economic growth but also conflict. "Blood diamonds" is the common phrase associated with the trade in diamonds that come from societies in conflict in Africa.
