As a Wisconsinite, I can tell you that the old Northwest was what is now widely considered the American Midwest. After the Revolutionary War, Great Britain was forced to cede its land west of the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River to the United States in the Treaty of Paris. This land was called the Northwest Territory and contained the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and part of Minnesota.
