What is the ironic in Lincoln's stated goal of ensuring "that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

    I think the irony revolves around who will not perish, is it the government or the people? Because this goal statement only gives emphasis and importance to the government that serves the people and not the people who needed to live their lives under the government.
