What were the reasons why slavery was abolished, and Did it lead to separation in the family and society?

    In the United States, the only reason slavery was abolished was the Civil War, since up to this conflict the Southern states had refused to limit their ability to use slaves for labor. This led to a major division within society--since the almost the entirely of the population in the North was opposed to slavery.
