What was the status of the Church in French society before the revolution? How did this status change through the different phases of the revolution?

Religion was more than very important to the people of this time. The church has a very high significant status before the revolution. As time went on religion was a big deal but not as big pre revolution so the churches lost their high social status though time and it kept going down as time went on.
