No. War between northern and southern states was inevitable. Why? Although both still held racial prejudice against African American folks, the northerners had no need of slavery due to its industrialized economy and advanced tech that created fast, efficient, and cheap labor. Whereas the southerners remained an agricultural economy, lagging behind northern folks. Slavery was a huge aspect of southern life and economy. Vital to keep its agricultural lifestyle going and was thus the main reason it remained constant. Not to mention the popular sovereignty belief that further increased tension amongst northern and southern folks.
