    The correct answer is D. whether or not Missouri should enter the Union as a slave state or a free state. Because of that the Missouri compromise had to be made. Neither side wanted it to be the opposite of what they believed, so they decided to allow Missouri in as a slave state but Maine separated and became a non-slave state.
