    Let us solve the first problem by substitution

    y = x-1

    2x + y = 5

    substituting the value of y in equation 2,

    2x + (x-1) = 5

    = 2x + x = 5 + 1 = 6

    3x = 6

    thus, x = 6/3 = 2

    Now, y = x - 1

    = 2 - 1

    =1.

    Thus, x = 2, y = 1

    Now for the second one:

    3x - y = 8

    y-3x = - 2

    Thus, by eq. 2,

    y = 3x - 2

    Substituting the value of y in equation 1,

    3x - (3x-2) = 8

    = 3x - 3x = 10

    thus, 0 = 10; which is a false statement

    Thus, it has no solutions
