    1) - 5y - 9 = - (y - 1)

    2) solve the parenthesis of the right side

    -5y - 9 = - y + 1

    3) add 5y to both sides

    5y - 5y - 9 = - y + 5y + 1

    - 9 = 4y + 1

    4) Subtract 1 from both sides

    -9 - 1 = 4y + 1 - 1

    -10 = 4y

    5) Divide both sides by 4

    -10 / 4 = 4y/4

    - 2.5 = y

    Answer: y = - 2.5
