    Set up two equations to better understand the values and variables given.

    You: y=10s

    Friend: y=9s+12

    Then, set them equal to each other to find when the values are the same/

    10s=9s+12

    10s-9s=12

    s=12

    After 12 seconds, you and your friend will be the same distance from the starting line.
