    2x - 3 = 10x + 1 ... subtract 2x from both sides:

    -3 = 8x + 1 ... subtract 1 from both sides:

    -4 = 8x ... divide both sides by 8

    -4/8 = x ... reduce the fraction

    -1/2 = x

    Or you could do:

    2x - 3 = 10x + 1 ... subtract 10x from both sides:

    -8x - 3 = 1 ... add 3 to both sides

    -8x = 4 ... divide both sides by - 8

    x = 4/-8 ... reduce the fraction

    x = - 1/2
