    Step-by-step explanation:

the number of freshmen that played basketball and volleyball only is

    5 - 4 = 1

the number of freshmen that played basketball and soccer only is

    7 - 4 = 3

the number of freshmen that played volleyball and soccer only is

    5 - 4 = 1

the number of freshmen that played volleyball only is

    17 - (1 + 4 + 1) = 11

the number of freshmen that played basketball only is

    15 - (1 + 4 + 3) = 7

the number of freshmen that played Soccer only is

    16 - (3 + 4 + 1) = 8

Therefore, the number of freshmen that played one or more of the sports would be

    7 + 11 + 8 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 4 = 35
