17. Cecilia has an 8-inch by 12-inch sheet of rectangular

paper. She cuts out identical 4-inch by 3-inch

rectangles from two corners of the paper. She then

cuts out identical right triangles from the other

two corners of the paper. Using the diagram shown,

find the area of the remaining paper.

    Step-by-step explanation:

    The area of the original rectangle is 8 * 12 = 96

    The area of each of the small rectangles is 3 * 4 = 12

    We know, 4 of these rectangles are cut, so area of 4 of these are:

    12 * 4 = 48

    The area of the remaining part, thus, is:

    Area of remaining paper = 96 - 48 = 48 square inches
