    Let Amanda spend x.

    Larry spend $5 more than Amanda, = (x+5).

    Total = $ 18.

    Therefore = x + (x+5) = 18

    = 2x + 5 = 18

    2x = 18-5

    2x = 13. Divide both sides by 2.

    x = 13/2 = 6.5

    Recall: Larry = (x+5) = (6.5 + 5) = 11.5

    Larry = $11.50.

    That's the amount spent by Larry.

    If Amanda spent an unknown amount of money, then we can say that she spent x amount of dollars. Larry spent $5 more than Amanda, so his purchases can be represented by x + 5. In total, they spent $18, so the equation is: Total Expenses = Amanda's purchase + Larry's purchase OR 18 = x + (x + 5) Simplifying, we get 18 = 2x + 5 Bring the 5 over 13 = 2x Divide by 2 x = 6.5 Therefore Amanda, who spent x amount of dollars, really spent $6.50, and Larry spent $6.50 + $5 = $11.50.
