If you are x years old, then three times your age is x*3, or 3x. the problem then states that your uncle is 2 years older than that, so then answer leads to 3x+2. If you are 12, substitute that into the equation (x), so 3 (12) + 2. 3*12=36, 36+2=38. Your uncle is 38 years old if you are 12.
