    I'd look at it this way: x (1.2) = 187, so solving for x we find that the bill before tip was 187/1.2 = 155.83. 155.83 x. 20 = 31.17. So 155.83 (bill) plus 31.17 (tip) = 187. So their tip was 31.17

The answer is 37.4. The tip of 20 percent multiplied by the cost is 224.4, and when added to the original cost, 224.4 is the answer.
