Combine like terms in the expression

-5x + 2y + 5x - 8y.

    Start by changing the - 8y to plus a negative 8y.

    Now combine your "x" terms and your "y" terms.

    So - 5x + 5x is 0x and 2y + - 8y is - 6y.

    So the answer is 0x - 6y or just - 6y.
