The difference of two numbers is 8. Five times the smaller number equals the greater numbers. Find the numbers.

    call the numbers x and y

    say x is the larger number, then x-y=8

    and 5y=x

    so now substitute 5y for x in the first equation to get:

    x-y=8 means 5y-y=8; 4y=8 or y=2; your numbers are 2 and 10
