Make the mixed number (mixed fraction) into a whole fraction.

    1. Multiply the whole number with the denomonater of the mixed number

    1 1/3 Multiply 1 and 3 to get 4.

    2. Add 4 with numerator.

4 + 1 is 5. Put 5 above 3 (you keep the denomonator) and add it with the whole number. 5/3 + x (your number ... etc)

    1/3 + 2/9

You have to make sure that the 2 numbers being added have the same denominators.

Multiply both the numerator and denominator by 3.

    3/9 + 2/9

    Add the numerators.

    5/9
