    (2/5) * total candies = 34

    (2/5) x = 34

    multiply both sides by the reciprocal (5/2) to clear the fraction coefficient.

    (5/2) (2/5) x = 34 (5/2)

    x = 17 * 5

    x = 85

    All you have to do is find out what 2/5 of 34 are so that would equal, 2/5*34 = 13.6 then do that * 3 = 51.4 + 3.62 (13.6 * 2 = 3.62) = 55 candies are in the bag.
