    4 (2x+14) = 0

    Divide both sides by 4. The 4 cancels out.

    2x+14=0

    Subtract 14 from both sides

    2x=-14

    Divide both sides by 2

    x=-7

    4. (2x+14) = 0

    8x+56=0

    8x=0-56

    8. x = - 56

    x = - 56:8

    x = - 7
