In order to do this, We need common denomonators.

What is something that we can times 4 by to equal 8. We can times 4 by 2 to get 8. What is done to the bottom must be done to the top, meaning you will have to times 3 by 2 as well to get 6/8. Your problem will now look like:

    4 1/8 - 6/8

This means that your answer will be:

    Mixed Fraction: 3 3/8

    or

    Improper Fraction: 27/8
