A drink costs x pence

A cake costs 7 pence more than a drink

The total cost of two drinks and a cake is 97 pence

Form an equation in x and solve it to find the cost of a cake

    2x + x + 7 = 97

    Simplify:

    3x + 7 = 97

    Subtract 7 from both sides:

    97 - 7 = 90

    3x = 90

    Divide both sides by 3

    90/3 = 30

    The cost of one drink is 30 pence.
