N is added to 15 less than 3 times itself result is 101

    n is added (n+)

    15 less than (-15)

    3 times itself (3n)

    result is 101 (=101)

so the n's are plusses and 15 is minus

the answer is 3n-15+n=101 (fyi, n=29)

    N

    3*n = 3n

    15 less than 3n = 3n - 15

    n + (3n - 15) = 101

The equation is the first one 3n - 15 + n = 101 which is the same with what we got.
