The stars when you are out in space are a lot brighter that you see them from earth, and in space they have a black back ground.

Also when looking at the stars while in space they do not twinkle like the appear to do when you look at them through the atmosphere of earth.

So take what they told you about Jane and John and say how they describe the stars and then the answer to why they look different to the two of them is because everyone has their own perspective. Maybe environmental factors affected why they see them differently? I don't know the whole story so I cant be very specific. But for example if John lives in a big city he won't be able to see as many stars as someone who lives in the middle of nowhere.
