If two automobiles collide they usually do not stick together. does this mean the collision is elastic

    Not necessarily. The collision is only completely elastic if kinetic energy is completely conserved. Even if they don't stick together, they can still be considered inelastic. Sticking together is considered a completely inelastic collision. So unless the problem states that it is a completely elastic collision, don't assume it is.
