A tennis ball may leave the racket of a top player on the serve with a speed of 60.0 m/s. If the ball's mass is 0.0600 kg and it is in contact with the racket for 0.0100 s, what is the average force on the ball?

Would this force be large enough to lift a 60 kg person?

    360 N.

    The force will not be large enough to lift a person of mass 60 kg

    Explanation:

    Force: This can be defined as the product of mass and acceleration. The S. I unit of Force is Newton (N).

    Force is expressed as

    F = m (v-u) / t ... Equation 1

    Where F = Average force on the ball, m = mass of the ball, v = final velocity, u = initial velocity, t = time.

    Given: m = 0.06 kg, v = 60 m/s, u = 0 m/s (the ball was held still on the hand before serve), t = 0.01 s.

    Substitute into equation 1

    F = 0.06 (60-0) / 0.01

    F = 360 N.

    Hence the force = 360 N.

    force required to lift a person of mass 60 kg = mg

    = 60*9.81

    = 588.6 N.

    The force will not be large enough to lift a person of mass 60 kg
