A tennis player receives a shot with the ball (0.0631 kg) traveling horizontally at 53.7 m/s and returns the shot with the ball traveling horizontally 40.5 m/s in the opposite direction.

a. What is the impulse delivered to the ball by the racquet?

b. What work does the racquet do on the ball?

    Impulse = change in momentum

    = m (v - u)

    =.0631 (40.5 + 53.7)

    = 5.944 N. s

    b)

    Work done will be equal to change in kinetic energy

    = 1/2 m (40.5² - 53.7²)

    = 1/2 m (1640.25 - 2883.69)

    = - 621.72 x m

    = - 39.23 J
