8) Compare the kinetic translational energy in each of the following scenarios. State which, if

either, has more and calculate the scalar value.

a) two elephants, both with mass 500 kg, one of which is travelling with velocity

V = 1.00 m/s and the other with v = - 1.00m/s

b) two tranquilizer darts, one with mass 2.00 g and V = + 300m/s and another with mass

4.00 g and v = - 150m/s

c) two park rangers, each traveling at speed v = 2.00 m/s, one of whom has a mass of 100. kg and another with weight 900. N.

    a) KE₁ = ½ mv² = ½ (500 kg) (1.00 m/s) ² = 250 J

    KE₂ = ½ mv² = ½ (500 kg) (-1.00 m/s) ² = 250 J

    b) KE₁ = ½ mv² = ½ (0.002 kg) (300 m/s) ² = 90 J

    KE₂ = ½ mv² = ½ (0.004 kg) (-150 m/s) ² = 45 J

    c) KE₁ = ½ mv² = ½ (100 kg) (2.00 m/s) ² = 200 J

    KE₂ = ½ mv² = ½ (900 N / 9.8 m/s²) (2.00 m/s) ² = 184 J
