During a demonstration of the gravitational force on falling objects to her class, Sarah drops an 11 lb. bowling ball from the top of the science building. Determine distance the ball has traveled after falling for 1.0 second, ignoring air resistance and given the gravitational acceleration of 9.8 m/sec2. A) 4.9 m B) 11 m C) 20 m D) 32 m

    Given that,

    mass of ball, m = 11 lbs

    Time, t = 1.0 seconds

    Acceleration, a = 9.8 m/s²

    Distance, s = ?

    Since, we know that,

    S = Vi * t + 1/2 at²

    Since initial velocity is zero in this case (ball was at state of rest before falling to the ground)

    S = 1/2 * 9.8 * (1) ²

    S = 4.9 m

    The distance covered by ball after one second will be 4.9 m.
