The milky way appears to us as a patchy and irregular band across the sky. what accounts for this?

    This is due to the dust and gas of the nebula that sit between our solar system and the Milky Way galaxy. This dust and gas disperse and scatter the light from the stars behind it hence blocking the view and making the galaxy look patchy.
