What is one way to find the number of valence electrons in an element

    Count the columns on the periodic table from left to right and the valence electrons the first column of elements has is one. Second column has 2 and so on until you reach 8. The only exception is helium does not have 8. It is in the 8th column but it has 2 valence electrons.
