Law of conservation of mass

"When you burn a log in the fireplace, the resulting ashes hae a mass less than that of the original log. Account for the difference in mass."

    The only product from the burning is not the ash. Gasses are also released and the mass of these must also be accounted for. This is the reason there is a difference in mass.
