When setting data validation, what do you need to establish criteria for?

Data validation involves ensuring correctness of the processed data. In order to ensure the correctness of the data, criteria that could be established are; (i) checking the sub totals - column wise & row wise separately, (ii) applying the basic arithmetic properties such as; associative, commutative and distributive properties in the data.
