Why did stephen douglas get the second most votes in the 1860 election but only got 12 electoral college votes

    Because most of the voters were in the northern cities. though linconln won them, he only go on average 55% of the vote in each of the states that he won, and douglas took 40%, so he had a lot of the country, but no electoral votes
