Those who controlled the Atlantic Ocean trade controlled the world because everyone wanted to go to the new world after Columbus discovered it. The Atlantic ocean was a key to this so who controlled it controlled everything. It also meant that people could now start exporting slave to the new world and this became immensely important in the years to come.
