Mathew simply leveraged on his cultural capital to elevate his career

Values are regarded as acceptable traits, behaviors, norms that serve as the foundation to bonding a group of people together.

In this instance, the love for fine French wine seems to be the bonding link between Mathew and the law firm partner.

Also, according to Pierre Bourdieu, in 1970s, cultural capital refers to how power exchanges hands and social status is maintained in a society.

Since birds of a feather flock together, the partner knowing that Matthew enjoys the same type of wine that he has penchant for, felt that Matthew's parents have trained him to mingle with the high social class and he should not be treated like a commoner, hence should be given his social deserved respect by a way of promotion.
